FAQs
Key chemicals include sanitizer (chlorine or bromine), pH increaser/decreaser, alkalinity increaser, calcium hardness increaser, stabilizer (cyanuric acid), and sometimes algaecide or clarifier.
Pool water should be tested at least twice per week during heavy use, or once per week in light use. Adjustments to pH, chlorine level, or alkalinity should be made based on test results.
Store chemicals in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep them sealed, separated by type (oxidizers vs reducers), away from incompatible substances. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling.
For most residential pools, chlorine should be between 1.0–3.0 parts per million (ppm). Shock treatments may require higher levels temporarily.
Some chemicals overlap (sanitizers, pH adjusters), but spas often require more frequent sanitization due to smaller volume and higher bather load. Always follow dosage guidelines specific for spa size and use frequency.
