Taylor® R-0003 DPD Reagent #3 is used in combination with other reagents to measure total chlorine and combined chlorine levels. It is a liquid reagent used as the third step in the DPD colorimetric process to measure total chlorine levels in pool & spa water, which then can be used in an equation along with free chlorine, to solve for the combined chlorine level of the water. This reagent identifies the presence of chloramines, which are responsible for strong chlorine odors and eye irritation. This reagent contains potassium iodide, which reacts with combined chlorine to release iodine, allowing it to be measured by the DPD indicator.

After testing for free chlorine using Taylor R-0001 (DPD Reagent #1) and Taylor R-0002 (DPD Reagent #2), typically five drops of DPD Reagent #3 (R-0003) is added to the same sample, any further increase in pink color indicates the presence of combined chlorine (chloramines) and gives a reading for total chlorine. The Combined Chlorine (CC) level can then be found by subtracting the Free Chlorine (FC) reading from the Total Chlorine (TC) reading.

Total Chlorine (TC)Free Chlorine (FC) = Combined Chlorine (CC)
